How Acupuncture Can Help Increase Your Chances of Success with IVF

What is Acupuncture?

Traditional acupuncture is based on ancient principles, which go back nearly 2000 years. Acupuncture regards pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance and the overall aim of acupuncture treatment is to restore the body’s equilibrium. Ultra-fine sterile needles are inserted into specific acupuncture body points. Most people (even those who don’t like needles) find the treatment painless and very relaxing.

Acupuncture is now widely used and accepted all over the world and there are many studies showing its benefits in helping couples and individuals conceive.

The Evidence: How Can Acupuncture Benefit Fertility Treatment?

Acupuncture can increase your chances of getting pregnant and having a baby.

A systematic review published in 2018 found having acupuncture improves the live birth rates of women undergoing IVF/ICSI. Existing evidence showed patients who had acupuncture had a higher pregnancy rate than those who didn’t when undergoing treatment.

  • Acupuncture is an effective strategy to manage stress and anxiety.
A study was undertaken in 2016 by Homerton University Hospital, in London, into the use of acupuncture with IVF. Preliminary findings show rates of success (pregnancy rates) were double in couples who had acupuncture treatment than those who didn’t.

Acupuncture For You – A Tailored Treatment Package

Acupuncture in the lead-up to and during an IVF or ICSI cycle, with increased frequency during ovarian stimulation as well as around the time of transfer can have a significant effect on pregnancy rates and live birth rates.

Acupuncture may be “dose dependent” i.e, requiring a sufficient number of treatments over an adequate period of time.

The best approach is to consult with a fully qualified acupuncturist to determine a treatment plan for you.

Acupuncture can be given at various times in the treatment process and has many benefits:

  • Prior to treatment – to influence the development of the egg by increasing blood flow to the ovaries, and to treat other underlying conditions e.g., Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, endometriosis etc. Treatment for this can start up to 3 months before your IVF cycle.
  • During ovarian stimulation – to help with egg maturation
  • To increase the thickness of the lining of the endometrium
  • To help manage the side effects of the IVF medications
  • To address male factor subfertility
